Scotland were left ruing a controversial decision to rule out Scott McTominay’s free-kick as Steve Clarke’s side suffered a 2-0 defeat to Spain in Seville.

McTominay thought he had given Scotland the lead in the Euro 2024 qualifier in a match where a draw would have been enough to seal their place in the tournament.

The midfielder curled a superb free-kick beyond Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon from close to the byline in the second half.

McTominay’s strike provoked celebrations from Scotland’s players and fans as Euro 2024 qualifier appeared to draw closer.

A VAR review led to the goal being ruled out, with the decision initially thought to have been due to a foul from Jack Hendry on Simon.

UEFA later confirmed the strike had been disallowed due to Henry being offside and interfering with play.

McTominay showed his frustration at the decision, with the Scotland and Man United midfielder seen throwing a water bottle down in frustration.

Spain took full advantage of their reprieve with Alvaro Morata putting the hosts ahead in the 74th minute from a Jesus Navas cross.

Ryan Porteous’s late own goal saw Scotland suffer a 2-0 defeat, ending their perfect record in Euro 2024 qualifying.

Scotland remain top of Group A on 15 points with Spain second in the standings on 12.

Clarke’s side will qualify for Euro 2024 should Spain beat third placed Norway on Sunday.
