Scholes tells Ten Hag how to save £100m for summer spending spree

Manchester United could potentially save £100million in the summer which could be put towards incoming transfers, if they listen to Paul Scholes’ advice. Erik ten Hag is set to continue his overhaul at Old Trafford at the end of the season, having seen several of his purchases become immediate successes for the Red Devils.

However, one glaring omission has been a top-level striker since Cristiano Ronaldo had his contract torn up prior to the World Cup. Wout Weghorst was brought in as a short-term option, but has recently found himself out of the team as the Dutchman has faced criticism for his lack of goals.

United are expected to spend over £100m this summer on a marquee striker to help the likes of Marcus Rashford and boost their options in forward areas, as Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen are among the names mentioned with moves to Old Trafford. However, both strikers could go for more than the British transfer record, which Chelsea recently broke to sign Enzo Fernandez for £106.8m.

However, Scholes feels that Anthony Martial could be the man to provide the necessary firepower up front. The Frenchman scored on his return from injury in the 2-0 win over Everton as he came off the bench in the second half, as the United icon claimed that Martial can score as many as 25 goals if he can stay fit.

“Look, it’s great to have him back, we all know the quality he’s got,” Scholes told BT Sport. “It’s just can he get through it now? Can he get through until the end of the season? He hasn’t got a great record fitness-wise but we all know how good of a player he is.

“If he’s playing in this team he scores 20-25 goals and that adds up to that big gap between Man United and City and Arsenal. It’s a little bit of a blow, I hope he’s okay. Just as Martial comes back then he goes out – them two together play really well, they have some kind of link that has been missing in forward areas, they’re both very dangerous.”

Martial showed his ability with a cool finish on his return, his fourth Premier League goal in 12 appearances including six starts under Ten Hag.

United have looked fluid with Martial leading the line which is a positive for the Dutch boss as he has experimented with his attacking quartet in recent weeks.

Rashford remained high up the pitch when Martial was introduced against Everton, which resulted in the second goal as he was able to capitalise on a mistake from Seamus Coleman and lay the ball on a plate for Martial to score – which could be a regular sight according to Scholes if Martial remains healthy at United.
