Paul Scholes believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves a new contract at Manchester United – but warned the manager he will need to deliver a trophy soon.
The Norwegian is reportedly set to be handed a new three-year contract at Old Trafford with his present deal due to expire in June 2022.

Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes believes Solskjaer will have to deliver some silverware soon
But if they fail to do so, it will mean a fourth consecutive season without silverware for United.
And Solskjaer’s former team-mate Scholes has made clear that is ultimately what any manager at the club will be judged on.
‘I think he probably deserves it. There’s been progress from the manager before [Jose Mourinho],’ the United legend said on the Webby & O’Neill YouTube show.
‘I think the team looks a lot more exciting, there are goals in the team, which you would expect from a United team anyway.
‘I think the only problem is: winning something. Losing four semi-finals is a little bit of a worry and losing that quarter-final to Leicester [in the FA Cup], it wasn’t good for fans especially.

The FA Cup exit came as a severe blow for Solskjaer and United as they chase some silverware
However, Paul Pogba’s winner took United past Milan into the last eight of the Europa League
‘The Europa League was tough in Milan, I thought players looked a little bit jaded – [Bruno] Fernandes especially, he did need the rest against Leicester.
‘But on the other hand, I don’t think United are in a position to rest people for the big games.
‘They have got 12, 13 players that are good enough to go and win a lot of games. But is the squad then deep enough when you’ve leaving these big players out to go and win the bigger games?
‘Out of the FA Cup and the Europa League, I’d still want to win the FA Cup. The Europa League is not where United want to be or should be.
Solskjaer was criticised for his decision to rest Bruno Fernandes for the cup tie with Leicester
United last won a piece of silverware in 2017 when they beat Ajax in the Europa League final
‘But they’re in it and they have a great chance of winning it with the teams are left in it. I think there is progress but I just think Ole needs to try and win something.’
United crashed out of the FA Cup with a 3-1 defeat at Leicester just before the international break with Solskjaer criticised for leaving talisman Fernandes out of the starting line-up.
They are second in the Premier League table and should qualify for next season’s Champions League and have been paired with Spanish club Granada in the last eight of the Europa League.
The first leg in Spain takes place on Thursday after United host Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday night.
