Scholes left ‘surprised’ by what Casemiro has brought to Man Utd this season

Paul Scholes has been left pleasantly surprised by Casemiro since the Brazilian made the move to Manchester United this summer.

As the transfer window ticked on down, the Red Devils went all-out for Casemiro after missing out on Frenkie de Jong. They landed the midfielder from Real Madrid for around £60million – a staunch fee for the 30-year-old.

And Erik ten Hag is yet to trust the five-time Champions League winner, instead opting for Scott McTominay in the holding role in the middle of the pitch. However, after a 45-minute cameo against Sheriff Tiraspol, United legend Scholes was left surprised by his attacking output.

He said in the BT Sport studio: "His awareness, I love this pass around the corner. He surprised me a little bit with his forward passing, his range of passing, I thought he was more of a winner, getting the ball back in midfield.

"It was Kroos and Modric last year, he has more to his game and showed more of a range to his game.

"That’s his first game for sometime, I think he will eventually, with his quality he’s got, work his way into the team."

United made light work of their Moldovan opponents on Thursday night with two first-half goals from Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo. Casemiro came on at half-time as Ten Hag looks to incorporate him into his style of play.

But the Brazilian had little to do with the damage already done, first from Sancho who scored a delightful effort with some fancy footwork. Ronaldo doubled the lead soon after from the penalty spot after Diogo Dalot was fouled in the box.
