Scholes left scratching his head after De Gea comments on Man Utd deal
Man Utd: Bruno Fernandes compares himself to Paul Scholes
Manchester United hero Paul Scholes has been left surprised by comments made by David De Gea. The goalkeeper’s existing deal is due to expire this summer. And though the Red Devils are hoping to tie the veteran down on reduced wages, nothing has been signed between the two parties just yet.
Speaking ahead of United’s Europa League clash with Sevilla, De Gea gave an interview to BT Sport.
And the Spain international was coy when quizzed on his contractual situation, with the 32-year-old currently looking set to become a free agent at the end of the season.
“I want to enjoy my football and to win trophies this season, my focus is only on the next game and then after that we will see,” he said.
Scholes was asked what he made of De Gea’s comments before kick off.
And the former United star admitted he was surprised by what the goalkeeper said, admitting everything was rather vague.

“That is a very vague answer, if you ask me,” he said. “Not too sure what to take from that.
“Look, he’s been a fantastic goalkeeper for Manchester United for such a long time, there were rumours a few years ago when it looked like he wanted to go back to Madrid, going to Real Madrid didn’t quite happen, and look, he’s been a fantastic goalkeeper for Manchester United.
“I think the only weakness you’d say is he’s not great with his feet, he’s not a brilliant footballer from the back and I’d think this manager does want that.
“On the other hand, how do you replace a goalkeeper of his quality?
“To me that [clean sheets] are the most important thing, but modern day football, they want a goalkeeper who can play football, don’t they?”
Another player Scholes was quizzed on is Marcel Sabitzer.
And he believes the Red Devils would be wise to land the Austria international on a permanent basis, having loaned the midfielder from Bayern Munich back in January.
“I think you summed it up perfectly, he might be a squad player,” he said after Owen Hargreaves had hailed Sabitzer.
“He would be one who comes into them bigger games.
“We had people like Darren Fletcher and John O’Shea who went into midfield – proper athletes, absolutely brilliant coming into them games, getting against people.

“You’d worry about Eriksen and Fernandes in them situations but someone like Sabitzer you can rely on.
“He gets the ball – Fred, people like that – so as a squad player.
“Look, he’s done alright, you’ll see him tonight, he’s playing in a position further up the field which I don’t see as a long-term thing, eventually he will end up back in central midfield.”
Regarding De Gea, meanwhile, former Aston Villa star Gabriel Agbonlahor recently criticised the goalkeeper.
And he expressed a belief that United would be wise to move their No 1 on come the end of the campaign.
“He’s in a completely different situation to Marcus Rashford, who is also out of contract soon,” he said. “Rashford is 25, De Gea is into his thirties.
“Rashford has been in the form of his life, De Gea hasn’t. Why would Man United be happy to keep him on his ridiculous contract?
“He doesn’t deserve it. I’m sure they’re not wanting him to go down to £100,000-a-week – he will still be on a fair wage. He’s not going to starve.
“Man United are probably not fussed if he goes. They’ve got Henderson potentially coming back, they can go into the market and sign whoever.
“De Gea has rinsed them for many years with some really poor performances. They can’t make the same mistake again. He won’t get that big money anywhere else, that’s for sure.”
