Schmeichel and Carragher slam Eden Hazard after Real Madrid's defeat to Chelsea
Peter Schmeichel, Jamie Carragher and Alex Scott have slammed Eden Hazard for his reaction to Real Madrid’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Chelsea.
Madrid were bidding to win a record-extending 14th Champions League title but were knocked out by Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea, losing 3-1 on aggregate.
Hazard struggled to make an impact across the two legs and was seen talking and joking with some of his former Blues teammates after Wednesday’s defeat at Stamford Bridge.
‘I don’t think there’s a problem congratulating someone you’ve come up against. But even if I saw someone later [that night], I still don’t think I’d be laughing and joking with them,’ Liverpool legend Carragher told CBS Sports.
‘It’s not right if you’re a young player coming through or an experienced player. It’s just not right to have that reaction at the end of a game. You should not react like that after a game of that magnitude.’
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Schmeichel added: ‘In my time we played and then we went to the players’ lounge and that’s where you’d meet up with your friends and spoke to opponents.
‘On the pitch, you shake hands, you go into the dressing room and let the manager say his piece and then the game is over and you can do literally whatever you want.
‘I don’t like to see it. Imagine being a Real Madrid fan and seeing that after going out of the Champions League.’
Former Arsenal women’s captain Scott, meanwhile, said: ‘Even when you’re playing with your national team, you have teammates and you have those conversations, but you know to wait until the cameras aren’t there. You speak to them after in the changing room.
‘There’s ways to conduct yourself. We had situations like that when I was Arsenal captain and it was up to me to have a word with the players. Was he [Hazard] doing it for the cameras? I don’t know.’
