BT Sport commentator Robbie Savage paid an emotional tribute to his son, Charlie, after the youngster was named on the bench for Manchester United's Champions League clash with Young Boys.

New interim boss Ralf Rangnick has included a clutch of United's most promising young stars for their final group game against the Swiss champions.

And Savage junior is one of those who has made the cut – and could be handed his senior debut for United.

It was an emotional night for his father, who was bursting with pride when discussing his son on BT's pre-match coverage.

"I’m starting to tear up because Charlie has achieved so much in his young life," Savage told BT.

"He’s never been top of the class but his application, his work ethic and desire has got him to where he is. My father who’s sadly not with us would be looking down proud of his grandson. Even if he doesn’t get on the pitch, whatever happens for the rest of his life he’s been on the bench for Manchester United.

"He’s done it on his own and all the coaches have played a huge part so I’m absolutely delighted. If he gets on to grace the Theatre of Dreams, his nana at home will be in tears now.

"He’s a great kid and he’ll do everything.

"He’s a great player and has a wonderful left foot. He can run and I think he’s the second fittest at the club. Take it all in because he’s one very lucky boy but a boy who’s worked incredibly hard."

Savage had hinted earlier in the day at Charlie's inclusion in the United squad after deleting a tweet that read: "proudest day of my life".

Charlie penned his first professional contract at Old Trafford back in April after progressing through the United youth ranks.

Savage has been joined in the squad for by Bjorn Hardley, Charlie Wellens, Sam Mather, Zidane Iqbal and Shola Shoretire.

Rangnick hinted in his pre-match press conference yesterday that there could be some unfamiliar faces in the United team for the clash with Young Boys.

“I haven't finally decided to be honest, but I think it definitely makes sense that we rest a few players due to the crowded fixture list over the next few weeks and months," the United boss said.

"We need to make sure that we have as much recovered players as possible, also for the Premier League, but on the other hand of course, we need to keep the positive momentum.

"Our ethos is to win games even if we maybe play with a few new players, fresh players, it's still important that we win the game."
