Saul Niguez could end up joining Chelsea on Transfer Deadline Day as negotiations with Atletico Madrid continue over an initial loan deal with an option to buy.
The Spain international midfielder seems keen to find a new challenge this summer after being crowned a champion of La Liga under Diego Simeone last season.
The 26-year-old may be under contract until 2026, but Atletico have been open to negotiations with Thomas Tuchel's side as the deadline approaches.
Any deal is likely to be an initial loan with an option to buy, and would become just their third incoming deal of the summer after Marcus Bettinelli and Romelu Lukaku.
The Athletic report that Chelsea are 'actively' working on a season-long loan deal with just hours of the window remaining.
They add that Saul would likely be the final incoming deal at Stamford Bridge this summer, and that Atletico are open to the move after he slipped down the pecking order under Simeone.
Despite making 41 appearances in all competitions last season, taking his tally to the club to 340, he has been named on the bench for their last two league fixtures.

Simone said of the player earlier this week: “Today I told him everything I think and feel, there is not much else.
"He’s been with us since we came here. We took him out of the academy and helped him achieve everything that he could achieve in his career.
“Now we will see what happens. We know that in football a lot of things can happen.”
With Tuchel saying of potential late deals last week: "Well we are hoping; we still have some ideas and we are trying.
"And not all decisions are taken regarding also to our squad. So there are some negotiations going on and we are aware of all the situations.
"Hoping as in meaning that we need something to make the coach happy or to be competitive? Absolutely not.
"Because I'm happy with the squad as it is, and I have a lot of confidence we are absolutely competitive on a high level."
