Saul Niguez has revealed that Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has promised to play him “in my position” following his deadline day move from Atletico Madrid. Saul spoke of the Blues manager’s plans for him after he joined the Champions League winners on a season-long loan on the final day of the transfer window.

Saul, 26, sealed his move to Stamford Bridge at the 11th hour on a frantic deadline day, which also saw a move for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde stopped dead in its tracks.

Chelsea have an option to sign Saul permanently at the end of this season for £30million.

And he will be looking to nail down a place in Tuchel’s side, having been used in a variety of positions at Atletico after dropping down the midfield pecking order due to Rodrigo de Paul’s emergence.

To that end, Saul has revealed that he has been promised by Tuchel he will play in his favoured central midfield position.

And that will affect the game time of his new team-mates N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic, who currently compete for two midfield spots in the manager’s favoured 3-4-2-1 formation.

“Chelsea has promised me to train in my position, to play we will see,” said Saul, quoted by The Mirror, as he backed himself to win a place in Chelsea’s engine room despite tough competition.

“To return to certain customs that I do not do now, that is the most important reason for my decision.

“The three midfielders who are playing are at a high level, it will not be easy to play, but if I put my mind to it and fight it, I can get it.

“I’ll give it a try and see what happens. Give it my all and help Chelsea so that he [Tuchel] can see the Saúl I want to show. Not just a versatile player. They promised me that I would play in my position. It was very important.”

Chelsea have announced Saul has been handed the number 17 shirt, which he wore in his early days at Atletico.

“It’s a number I had at Atletico Madrid, it’s a number I like,” said the Spaniard. “I had it at Atletico. I had it in my early days.”

Meanwhile, Saul is confident Chelsea can win the Premier League title – and plans to learn English as soon as possible to help Tuchel’s side achieve their aim.

“Since I was a child I only had two goals – make history at Atletico or play in the Premier League,” he told Chelsea’s official website.

“Not only because of the league itself, but because of its culture and the language.

“I want to learn the language as quickly as possible in order to communicate with my team-mates better. At Atletico I used to speak with [Kieran] Trippier, but my English isn’t good enough. I don’t dare do interviews in English!

“When a team wins the Champions League, you already know how strong they are – but when you actually face them, you realise how hard they work. I want to win the Premier League and I think I am in the best team to do it.”
