Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka says England are using the success of the women’s team as a motivator going into next month’s World Cup. 

The Lionesses made history this summer after winning Euro 2022, England’s first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup. 

Saka says the men’s team are hungry to win this year’s tournament in Qatar and seeing the women’s success has given them further motivation.

In an interview with ES Magazine, the 21-year-old said: ‘But yeah, the World Cup is always in the back of my mind. It’s the biggest tournament in the world.’  

‘I was really happy for them (England women). They made some history, a lot of history. I feel like there’s always fire in the belly, but seeing them do it… we’re all so proud. And we want to do it as well.’ 

He added: ‘When you play for your country, it means the world. You’re playing for a whole nation. You’re representing a whole nation. They’re all behind you, supporting you. It just means everything.’ 

‘And it’s important that people remember that.’ 

Saka looks almost guaranteed to be in the England squad for next month’s World Cup in Qatar

Saka looks almost guaranteed to be in the England squad next month, adding to the 20 caps he already has for the Three Lions. 

Last month, he was voted England’s player of the year for 2022 after some strong performances for Gareth Southgate’s side. 

In the same interview, Saka spoke about what it feels to win the award, saying: ‘‘And it’s the best players from each team in the country. The players I go to the camp with are very, very special. The quality I see all the time is through the roof.

Saka has been in fine form for a young Arsenal team that currently sit top of the Premier League, with four assists and a goal in eight appearances. 

He will be hopeful on continuing his strong form when Mikel Arteta’s side host Liverpool at the Emirates on Sunday evening.
