Saido Berahino was so rebellious he’d be fined ‘£6k a week’ for ill-discipline

Former Premier League striker Saido Berahino was so rebellious he clocked up £6,000-per-week worth of fines just for being late – according to Stephan Ireland.

Berahino was once touted as a future England No.9, and he was even courted by Tottenham as a youngster. However, Berahino never quite reached his potential, and these days can be found in the Cypriot top division.

Ireland and Berahino played together at Stoke, where Ireland admitted he liked the forward, even if he didn't help himself at times. Speaking to Ladbrokes: Fanzone, Ireland said: "Saido isn't a bad guy, he's rebellious.

"But in terms of fines, I'm talking every single day. No matter what; every day for the whole season he'd be late.

"It's as if he just hangs outside of the building, looking at his clock, waiting for it to pass a certain time, then he jumps in 30 seconds late. It's like he wanted to maintain being fined; I just couldn't understand it.

"He could come into the training ground before me; I'd pull up, and he'd be sitting in his car, on his phone. And then he'll be late into the building… it's a 30-yard walk. He must have spent so much – the fines were really, really hefty. He was probably spending £500 a day on fines."

The pair only spent one season together in the Potteries, with Ireland leaving for Bolton Wanderers in 2018 – and hanging up his boots shortly afterwards.

Berahino was soon on his way too and after failing to find his feet in Belgium – and a failed return to the EFL with Sheffield Wednesday – the forward now plies his trade for Cypriot side AEL Limassol.
