Sacking season is here! Santo, Schopp and Cox are all axed on Monday
Sacking season is here! Three managers are axed in an hour on Monday morning, with Barnsley’s Markus Schopp and Scunthorpe’s Neil Cox following Nuno Espirito Santo’s Tottenham departure
- Nuno Espirito Santo’s Tottenham exit wasn’t the only one on Monday morning
- Championship side Barnsley have also parted ways with Markus Schopp
- Scunthorpe, who are bottom of League Two, also sacked boss Neil Cox
The honeymoon period of the 2021-22 season is truly over after three managers were all axed on Monday morning after underwhelming starts to the campaign.
The big name was Nuno Espirito Santo, who departed his role as Tottenham manager after just four months at the helm in London.
But Championship side Barnsley and League Two outfit Scunthorpe also let the axe fall on their managers.

Tottenham broke the news of Santo’s exit at 9:51am and by 10am, Barnsley confirmed they had dismissed Markus Schopp with the club winless since August and second-bottom in the Championship.
Schopp was only appointed in June, replacing Valerien Ismael after he joined West Brom in the summer. Ismael had led Barnsley to the play-offs last season.
‘It is a pity that our hard work was not reflected in the results. I wish the club all the best for the future and that they will achieve all their goals,’ Schopp said.
Scunthorpe, meanwhile, then sacked Neil Cox with the club bottom of the football league at 10:45am.
Cox took over his boyhood club in August 2020 but departs after just two wins from 15 league matches.
Antonio Conte is widely expected to replace Santo as manager of Tottenham
But the big news on Monday was the exit of Santo, which Sportsmail exclusively broke on Monday.
The Tottenham board were alarmed at how angry fans were following the 3-0 defeat by Manchester United at the weekend.
Antonio Conte is widely expected to take over in place of the Portuguese boss and Spurs made contact with him over the position on Sunday night.
