Ryan Reynolds made to sweat over promotion as Wrexham fans fume

Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham’s hopes of securing automatic promotion suffered a big setback on Friday as they were beaten, while National League title rivals Notts County secured a convincing win.

Wrexham, owned by Hollywood A-lister Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney, suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat at Halifax Town. Meanwhile, Notts defeated Wealdstone 3-0 to move into top spot on goal difference, with both sides incredibly on 100 points.

Wrexham, courtesy of their game in hand, are still favourites but with the title rivals meeting in a massive showdown at the Racecourse Ground on Monday, nerves are certainly being frayed among fans of the north Wales club.

Many took to social media to declare their unhappiness with the performance at Halifax, who sit in the bottom half of the table.

“4k fans come to watch, including me, and that's what we get?,” bemoaned one supporter. Another pleaded: “Come on Wrexham, not again. Need to get out of national league. Luckily got a game in hand to go back top.”

A third said: “Very poor performance, but we still have the game in hand and Notts at home, going to the wire this.”

Some fans went in harder, branding the result and performance “pathetic”. One blasted: “Pathetic performance. The pressure on Monday’s game now is absolutely massive, and we only have ourselves to blame for.” Another posted: “Wasted opportunity. Pathetic.”

Meanwhile, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson admitted his players had been left stunned by the defeat to Halifax.

He said: “The lads aren’t used to losing. They’re a bit stunned in there because we know we didn’t really deserve anything from that second period and the first period we had chances to be out of sight. The players are quiet because they care a lot and they’re used to winning.

“But today is a real reminder for us that in any game of football there’s no divine right to turn up and win. You have to be strong as a team and be resilient.”
