Ryan Reynolds looks to gift Wrexham their ‘own Paul Scholes’ with ex-Man Utd man
What can Wrexham expect in League Two?
Wrexham are considering a move for a former Manchester United prospect who Sir Alex Ferguson once believed to be the successor to Paul Scholes. The Red Dragons are on the hunt for high-calibre players who can improve their National League title-winning team, as they make a return to the Football League after a 15-year hiatus.
And according to The Mirror, departing Stoke City midfielder Nick Powell is under serious consideration. A product of Crewe Alexandra’s youth academy, United paid the Railwaymen £6million to sign Powell 11 years ago.
Back then, he was being hailed as one of the outstanding English players of his generation. He enjoyed a phenomenal 16-goal League Two season in 2011-12 that saw him pick up Crewe’s awards for Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year.
But he was never able to take his game to the next level at Old Trafford and instead spent loan spells with Wigan Athletic, Leicester City and Hull City before signing for Wigan permanently in 2016. Powell joined Stoke City in 2019 but following a series of injuries is now a free agent after his contract with the Potters was allowed to expire at the end of the season.
Should Wrexham’s owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney convince Powell to step down two divisions and join their promotion charge in North Wales, it would need to be on considerably reduced wages to what he has become accustomed to at the Bet365 Stadium.
Powell is understood to have been one of Stoke’s top earners, around £16,000 per week. That type of package will not be on offer in League Two, even with the financial clout of Reynolds and McElhenney to prop things up, but if Powell is looking to take his career in a new direction there are suggestions that he may still want to be part of the ride with the Hollywood owners.
Should they convince the defensive midfielder to drop down two levels he would likely receive a package at least on par with the club’s top earner, striker Paul Mullin.

The Liverpool-born forward has already committed his future to Wrexham by signing a new three-year deal, while former England international Ben Foster has also confirmed that he will stay with the club an extra 12 months to prolong his goalkeeping career.
Reynolds and McElhenney suggested at the end of last season that they would like Welsh superstar Gareth Bale to come out of retirement and enjoy a season with Wrexham. Bt with little chance of that materialising, the club is mindful that they must allow manager Phil Parkinson to identify more realistic targets.
The Red Dragons boss has already indicated that he is prepared to be patient in order to bring the best players possible to the Racecourse Stadium, but it remains to be seen if the talented Powell will be one of them.
