Ryan Reynolds gives into Wrexham fans’ demands after receiving non-stop messages
What can Wrexham expect in League Two?
Ryan Reynolds has delighted his army of fans at Wrexham once more, but this time the Hollywood actor has appeased supporters off the pitch.
The Deadpool actor is now a household name in North Wales, underpinning the Red Dragons’ return to the Football League after a 15-year absence alongside co-owner Rob McElhenney.
Canadian-born Reynolds has become synonymous with a specially designed baseball cap that he wears for all matches featuring the Wrexham club badge on the front.
And after being constantly badgered by fans for the sharp headwear to become available to buy, he has finally succumbed to pressure.
Announcing the cap’s immediate availability, Reynolds Tweeted: “You asked. Then asked again. Then eventually someone listened. The hat is now available at the @Wrexham_AFC online store.”
Reynolds’ navy blue cap features an embroidered Wrexham crest on the front and the year 1934 stitched into the back. The date represents the Gresford disaster, when 266 men were killed by an underground explosion and fire at Gresford Colliery, near Wrexham on September 22, 1934, in one of Britain’s worst coal mining disasters.
Both Reynolds and McElhenney are routinely pictured wearing the unique headwear at the Racecourse Ground and following the club’s coronation as National League champions with a record 111 points, fans will now be able to get their hands on their own replicas of the hat.
The peaked cap is available in two sizes – M/L and L/XL and is retailing for £25 from the club store online.
Netflix documentary-makers Welcome to Wrexham were first to congratulate Reynolds on the decision, Tweeting: “Hats off to whoever finally listened.”
Screenwriter Sher Ross replied to Reynolds: “I bought my husband one and you would have thought it came directly from you. I was like chill dude! I was even happy to pay the shipping so he would shut up about the “Hat that Ryan always wears”.
Local supporter @steved0 Tweeted: “Deeply touched that 1934 appears on the back ; I can quietly commemorate the grandfather I never met every time I wear it.”
The Welsh club has moved quickly to capitalise on their recent success by launching a full range of ‘Champions’ merchandise on its online store, including t-shirts, mugs, banners, key rings and a 120-page souvenir story of the record-breaking season.
But not content with finally being able to get their hands on Reynolds’ hat, supporters have already moved on to their next in-demand garment.
Fans on Twitter have asked whether McElhenney’s American-style baseball jacket will also become available to buy, with the Wrexham badge embroidered into the fabric.
