Ryan Reynolds gets his wish as Wrexham fans chant new McElhenney song
Wrexham fans have debuted the new Ryan Reynolds song which the Hollywood actor wrote and released on Rob McElhenney’s birthday last week. The Deadpool actor wrote an amusing track to mark McElhenney turning 46 and, before Wrexham’s National League tie against Yeovil Town on Tuesday night, fans put the new tune into practice on the terraces.
The song, which was released to help people pronounce his co-owner’s surname correctly, saw Reynolds explain the ins and outs on how to say the Irish family name. It came after members of the media pronounced the name ‘McElhenney’ incorrectly on a number of occasions.
McElhenney, who celebrated his birthday last Friday (April 14), shared his surprise at his co-owner’s move on Twitter. Addressing his one million followers, he replied to Reynolds: “This is… I mean… I don’t… Wow.” That was in response to a post from Reynolds which the Deadpool actor captioned: “A birthday card might’ve been easier. Happy birthday, @rmcelhenney.”
Duly swapping Hollywood for Broadway in the video, Reynolds gives singing his best shot as he begins: “Sure he’s got a pretty face, that people know they know. They think they recognise him from his big-time TV show. But despite the accolades, despite the load of fame, one thing that they do not know is how to say his name.
“Pronouncing all those N’s and E’s and H’s can perplex ’em. So here’s a little birthday gift from all your mates in Wrexham. Its McElhenney, McElhenney. While ways to massacre and mispronounce it there are many. It’s McElhenney, McElhenney. If there was doubt, now there won’t be any… It’s McElhenney!”
The Canadian-American actor also challenged Wrexham’s die-hard fanbase to learn the words, as he added: “Would be a real shame if this became @wrexham_afc Racecourse chant.”
And a Racecourse chant it became because, as Wrexham hosted Yeovil, the song could be heard from the entirety of the iconic north Wales stadium as filmed by the RobRyanRed Wrexham podcast. While Reynolds might not have been there, McElhenney was – and he wasn’t alone in the stands.
His fellow cast members from the iconic comedy series ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ were also in attendance at the Racecourse. They were part of the crowd that chanted his name before the game began. McElhenney clapped along with the thousands singing for him before loud chants of “Wrexham! Wrexham!” rang out immediately after.
Wrexham took another step towards promotion to the English Football League, and winning the National League title, as they beat Yeovil 3-0 yesterday evening. Anthony Forde opened the scoring on the hour mark, with James Jones and Paul Mullin also finding the net.
The Red Dragons require just one more win for promotion, and they will be looking to secure a long-awaited return to League Two against Boreham Wood at home on Saturday.
