Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham to make a documentary
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have revealed that they bought Wrexham because they wanted to make a documentary about it.
The Hollywood duo surprised the world after buying the Welsh club back in November 2020 and have spearheaded the Dragons' rise into the mainstream, and hopefully, into the Football League soon too.
Following the takeover a docuseries called Welcome to Wrexham, which is set for release later this month, was announced, and earlier this week the actors sat down with The Athletic to discuss it.

"It’s always been a dream of mine to be associated in some capacity with a professional sports franchise, (I just never) knew of a rational or legitimate avenue into it," said McElhenney.
"And then it was over the pandemic when I started watching a lot more documentaries and started getting into football and then learned about the English system and realized – wait, that’s an interesting way in."
The duo spoke about the appeal of an 'underdog story' and given how long Wrexham have spent out of the Football League, and given the size of the town, they figured the club was perfect.

Reynolds and McElhenney have been heavily involved with helping the local community in Wrexham since day one and Reynolds insists that isn't just for show.
"For us – it’s just about transparency," the Deadpool star said. "We’re not here to project some idea that we know what we’re doing in terms of running a football club.
"We are here to say that we’re gonna be responsible, respectful and reverent of the institution that is Wrexham and that we’re going to do everything we can to grow this and build this like we would any other business, or film or television show or anything like that.

"We just went in very honestly and said look, your average five-year-old in Wrexham has forgotten more about football than we will ever know. But we are going to do our best to make sure that the success of the club is commensurate to the success of the community, and vice versa."
Wrexham finished second in the National League last season but were agonisingly denied promotion after losing in the semi-final of the play-offs to Grimsby. They also finished runners-up in the FA Trophy, losing 1-0 to Bromley in a tense final at Wembley.
