Ryan Giggs wants football return after being cleared of attacking ex-partner

Ryan Giggs wants to return to football after being cleared of attacking his live-in lover.

The Manchester United legend was “deeply relieved” after charges against him were finally dropped, following his arrest nearly three years ago. His PR executive ex Kate Greville, 39, told police and lawyers she did not want to go through the ordeal of a second trial after jurors failed to reach verdicts following the first one last year.

A retrial was due to begin on July 31. But on Tuesday lawyers at Manchester Crown Court said there was no longer any realistic prospect of his conviction and it was not in the public interest to proceed with the case.

A judge entered “not guilty” verdicts on charges Giggs assaulted Kate causing her actual bodily harm and coercively controlled her. He was also cleared of a common assault on Kate’s sister Emma, 27.

Afterwards, a source close to Giggs, 49, who quit his “dream” job of managing Wales ahead of last year’s trial, said: “His intention is to resume his managerial and coaching career.

Chris Daw KC, defending Giggs, who was not present in court, said: “Mr Giggs is deeply relieved the prosecution has finally come to an end after almost three years in which he’s been fighting throughout to clear his name.

“He has always been innocent of these charges, there’s been very, very many lies told about him in court.

“He’s now been found not guilty of all the charges and going forward would like to rebuild his life and career as an innocent man.”
