Roy Keane told West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola to “come out with violence” after the Hammers’ FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.
David Moyes’ side took the lead in the second half through a wonderful strike from Said Benrahma, but capitulated in the closing stages of the contest. An own goal from West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd brought Erik ten Hag’s men level, before a wonderful strike from Alejandro Garnacho and a breakaway goal from Fred in injury time secured a 3-1 victory for the Red Devils.

“The keeper has got to come out there,” Keane said after the match. “A goalkeeper coach I used to work with used to say, ‘come out with violence’.
“Then they have a little discussion afterwards like they are in Starbucks. Come out with violence! That’s your job!” Areola has mainly been a cup goalkeeper for West Ham with usual No.1 Lukasz Fabianski given the nod for Premier League matches.

However, the Poland goalkeeper’s fractured cheek bone means the former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper will likely be required for all competitions for the rest of the season. Nevertheless, Keane evidently had a taste for West Ham defensive blood, as he rounded on the rest of the backline and midfield for their performance at Old Trafford.
“I have seen it all before,” the former Red Devils’ captain growled. “They come, get a bit giddy, have opportunities, not just West Ham, but the Spurs of this world.
“They get possession, one or two chances, they get plaudits, they end up getting beaten. Defensively West Ham were shocking, absolutely useless and gave away three goals.
“I have seen it over the years, but it’s laughable.”
