Roy Keane praises Man Utd transfer target Rice days after comparison
Roy Keane has heaped praised Manchester United transfer target Declan Rice – just days after club legend Teddy Sheringham compared the West Ham star to the former Irish midfielder.
United hold a long-standing interest in Rice and were understood to be keen on a deal during the recent transfer window.
West Ham did not want to sell and the 22-year-old is still at the London Stadium, although recent reports suggest a deal is now almost certain to happen next summer.
Rice has no shortage of admirers at Old Trafford, with Sheringham comparing him to Keane and Michael Carrick earlier this week.
"He’s in the mould of Roy Keane and Michael Carrick, who were two top, top players, which you’ve got to have in midfield for Manchester United. So he’d easily fit in there," said Sheringham.
Before United's game with West Ham on Sunday, Keane added his voice to the growing number linking Rice with a move to Old Trafford.
He said: "I think he would [improve United’s midfield] I think Declan has improved more than any player I’ve seen over the last one or two seasons.

"I know he’s been linked with United. If you said to me a year or two again I’d of said no, let him stay a year or two to mature. He’s 22 and I look to where I was, I think he’s way ahead of me when I was 22.
"I think the next step will come to him when he plays a higher level and when I say higher level I mean for Man United, Champions League, competing for trophies."
Keane also commented how Sunday's match between the two sides would be an important audition for Rice if he does want to join United next summer.
"He’s obviously a regular for England, big pluses for him is there’s a lot more to come from him," Keane added
"[Cute final passes] I think that’ll come with playing in bigger games, he’s always available, he’s a big presence out there and I think it’ll be a really big judge for him because
"I’m not a big fan of the Man United midfield lads I think they’re a bit short so we’ll see how he does against them."
