Roy Keane has confirmed his desire to return to management and says he will see what this weekend brings after being interviewed by Sunderland on Friday.

Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday that Keane was the first choice of many within the club to replace Lee Johnson and he has now met with the hierarchy.

Keane was in the ITV studio for last night’s FA Cup tie between his former club Manchester United and Middlesbrough, and he said: ‘I’d like to go back in as a manager. But a club has to want you, you have to want to go and the contract has to be right. We’ll see how things take shape over the next few days.’

Roy Keane has hinted that he has held talks with Sunderland over their managerial vacancy

Keane enjoyed a hugely successful period in charge of the Black Cats and could go back

Keane could not hide a smile when asked about the Sunderland link and said to fellow pundit Ian Wright: ‘Would you survive without me?’.

The Irishman joked that he would stay as a pundit if Wright could not cope without him, hinting that he could well be on his way to the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman and owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus have led the manager search and they concluded their interview process on Friday.

Former Hull boss Grant McCann, ex-Preston chief Alex Neil and former Nottingham Forest head coach Sabri Lamouchi are also in the frame.

However, we understand Keane is the frontrunner and, should terms be agreed, he could be confirmed as manager this weekend, 13 years after quitting the club.

Keane has spent the past few seasons taking up punditry duties but has made no secret of his desire to return to football management
