Roy Keane blasts 'stupid' Man Utd star after FA Cup final defeat to Man City

Roy Keane blasted Fred after Manchester United’s FA Cup final defeat and said his error in the build-up to Manchester City’s winner was the ‘height of stupidity’.

Ilkay Gundogan scored twice as City won their seventh FA Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over local rivals United at Wembley.

Gundogan’s first goal came after just 13 seconds – making it the fastest FA Cup final goal in history – but United equalised before half-time thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ penalty.

United were not level for long, though, with Gundogan restoring Manchester City’s lead with another long-range volley six minutes after the restart.

Man City’s winner came from a free-kick on the wing that Fred gave away for an unnecessary foul on Kevin de Bruyne, and Keane pointed out that it is not the first time the Brazilian has cost his side.

‘Fred had Kevin de Bruyne where he wants him,’ the former Manchester United captain told ITV Football. ‘De Bruyne has his back to goal and then Fred fouls him.

‘It’s the height of stupidity… But we’ve seen that from him so many times over the years.’

While Manchester City were beaten at Wembley by their local rivals, it has still been a largely promising season for Erik ten Hag’s side, who finished third in the Premier League and won their first trophy – the League Cup – since 2017.

Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel said on BBC One: ‘Today is tough to take, you get to Wembley and don’t win – that’s tough.

‘The season has been really good, though. Think back to the first two games of the season and it didn’t look great but United have won a trophy and finishing third.

‘Erik ten Hag has taken away 10 years of uncertainty and the future looks really bright.’

Manchester City are now one win away from securing a historic treble as they look to add the Champions League to their Premier League and FA Cup trophies.

‘We can now talk about the treble,’ City boss Pep Guardiola said. ‘Of course we still have to win the Champions League. We performed so well today for our city and our fans.’
