Roy Keane and Micah Richards ‘shaken’ after alleged headbutt

Arsenal V Manchester United: Pictures

Roy Keane and Micah Richards have been left ‘shaken’ after getting caught up in a confrontation during Arsenal’s win over Manchester United. The pair were on punditry duties for Sky Sports at the Emirates Stadium as two late goals from Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus gave the hosts a memorable victory.

An unsavoury incident took place just minutes before the full-time whistle inside the Highbury Bar when Keane was allegedly headbutted by a fan. Micah Richards was seen holding a man by the collar in a video that was shared online, with the supporter in question later being thrown out by security staff.

Both pundits were left ‘shaken’ by the incident, according to The Sun, while Sky is understood to be beefing up its security at future matches in response to what happened. Keane and Richards had been waiting near a lift at the members-only Highbury Bar, at the top of the West Stand, when the confrontation took place.

An eyewitness told Express Sport: “The fan seemingly tried to head-butt Roy Keane. I then saw a mark between his eyebrows. Micah Richards stepped in and pushed the fan back against the door. I heard the altercation and I was shocked to see the individuals involved.

“Richards was very forceful at keeping the fan from attacking Keane and neither their security nor the door security could split the two apart. Keane was asking nearby staff to call the police. Additional security was called in and Richards and Keane followed until the fan was escorted downstairs via the escalator out of the building.”

The police are now believed to be looking into what happened, with a Sky Sports spokesperson confirming: “We understand the police are investigating an alleged assault by a member of the public immediately preceding the footage circulating on social media. In the footage seen, Micah Richards was acting to diffuse a situation.”

The incident occurred on an eventful day at the Emirates Stadium both on and off the pitch, with Arsenal coming from behind to register a famous win over United. Marcus Rashford fired the visitors in front after 27 minutes before Martin Odegaard levelled proceedings just a minute later.

Alejandro Garnacho thought he had scored a last-gasp winner for United before his cool finish was ruled out for offside following a VAR intervention. The result eventually went in Arsenal’s favour thanks to two dramatic stoppage-time goals from Rice and substitute Jesus to condemn United to yet another Premier League defeat.
