Roy Hodgson squares up to player 50 years younger than him in touchline spat

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson proved you don't want to get on his bad side after he squared up to Max Lowe.

Hodgson's Palace opened their Premier League campaign against newly-promoted Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon. And with the scores level, Lowe attempted to quickly take a throw-in – shoving Hodgson to get the ball in the process.

The 76-year-old was less than impressed with his actions, squaring up to the footballer – who is over 50 years his junior. Jordan Ayew had to play peacemaker as he separated his boss and Lowe, allowing the game to continue.

"Roy’s a Croydon brudda, let’s not take the p*** here," one fan joked. While a second added: "I love Roy. 76 and looking for a tear up. Never change Roy you absolute legend!"

"Roy Hodgson having scraps on the first day of the season this is what we wanna see," a third said. While a fourth tweeted: "Roy not taking a backward step after the push!"

"I love stuff like this. However, if this was a different manager there’d be hell on," a fifth said. And another added: "Just saw this on MOTD, Max Lowe bout to catch these ye olde hands. Go on Big Roy!"

Palace took the three points thanks to Odsonne Edouard's strike.

"Odsonne's been excellent in pre-season," said Hodgson after the game. "I don't think we saw the best of him last season. In the 10 games I had at the end of the season we always thought the quality was there.

"What he's done for us in pre-season and today, that's what he's got. That's in his locker and it's really good to see him bringing that out.

"I hope today's game, not just the goal but his all-round play, will improve his confidence because if we can get him playing at that level week after week, I think we can be a handful for a lot of teams."
