Derby County twice came from behind to salvage a dramatic 3-3 draw against Sheffield Wednesday as they survived relegation to League One having been heading down at the break.

Wayne Rooney’s side knew that a win would keep them up on the final day, but fell behind to Sam Hutchinson as Rotherham took the lead at Cardiff through Lewis Wing.

While Wednesday were very briefly out of the bottom three following Cardiff's equaliser, a turnaround from the Rams saved them from a first third tier season since 1985/86.

Martyn Waghorn grabbed the equaliser before loanee Patrick Roberts fired home in style past Kelle Roos. Callum Paterson and Julian Borner then netted – with Waghorn converting from the spot.

The draw condemned Wednesday to the bottom of the table, with Rotherham relegated after failing to win. Wycombe ended up above both following a win over Middlesbrough.

Rooney insisted before the game that his future would be at Derby whatever division they were in, but thankfully for him his side did enough to avoid the drop.

"It is the biggest game in terms of what's at stake for the club," Rooney had said.

"It's important to so many in the city, to everyone connected with Derby."

Rooney’s record in charge now stands at 10 wins from 36 fixtures, with 18 defeats.

Derby last played in the third tier way back in 1985/86 where they gained the first of back-to-back promotions before four years in the top flight.

The Rams could’ve been playing the likes of Cheltenham and Cambridge next season should the League One table remain the same, but will now play Hull and Peterborough who have been promoted.
