Rooney speaks with struggling Maguire a lot – including the Greece saga
Wayne Rooney has revealed that he speaks to struggling Manchester United captain Harry Maguire “a lot”, including during his arrest in Greece back in 2020.
Maguire has come under increasing fire for his performances for the Red Devils amid what has been a challenging campaign.
They have already been dumped out of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup while also facing a major battle to finish in the top four of the Premier League.
Many of their problems have stemmed from a dire defensive record, which is the joint-worst in the top nine of the table, with skipper Maguire drawing much of the criticism for that.
Some critics are of the belief that he was handed the armband too early into his United career and is struggling under the weight of the title.
Rooney knows full well what it feels like to be United captain, having frequently worn the armband during his 13-year spell at Old Trafford.
And the now-Derby manager has revealed that he speaks to Maguire frequently, including when the defender was arrested while on holiday on the Greek island of Mykonos.
Maguire was found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult, but has launched an appeal against that verdict.

He faces a long wait for that appeal to be heard, but has been getting advice from United’s record goalscorer.
“I've spoken to Harry a lot of times. I spoke to Harry a lot. Very good conversation with him, you see, with incident in Greece, things on football as well,” Rooney told Daily Star Sport at the premiere of his new Prime Video documentary.
“So I speak to Harry on things and try and help him give him advice, of course. But he is his own person who is Manchester United in his own right and Man Utd captain in his own right.
“And then sometimes you have to go through these moments to improve yourself.”
