Ronaldo sends message to Guinness World Records after smashing goal record

Cristiano Ronaldo has responded in the only way he knows after messaging the Guinness World Records.

It follows the 36-year-old claiming the world record for the most goals in men's football international matches.

Ronaldo has taken the record off Iran legend Ali Daei, who had scored 109 in 148 matches for his country.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner put in yet another performance to elongate his legacy when Portugal found themselves 1-0 down to the Republic of Ireland.

With time running out, Ronaldo netted two late headers to claim victory – the first in the 89th minute and the second in the 96th.

It took the forward up to 111 goals for his country but he has insisted he has not stopped yet and has plans to continue rattling them in.

After receiving his world record certificate, he tweeted: "Thank you to the Guinness World Records.

"Always good to be recognized as a world record breaker. Let’s keep trying to set the numbers even higher!"

Ronaldo has had a turbulent couple of weeks after telling Juventus he wanted to leave with just days left in the transfer window.

A move to Manchester City appeared to be top of the order, much to the disdain of Manchester United fans – including Rio Ferdinand.

Yet in the last moment, Ronaldo made the move to Old Trafford instead to complete a remarkable turnaround in the transfer window.

The veteran striker wrote on Instagram: "Everyone who knows me, knows about my never ending love for Manchester United.
