Ronaldo brands Rooney and Carragher "jealous" after MNF rant
Cristiano Ronaldo has branded Wayne Rooney and Jamie Carragher as "jealous" after the Derby manager went on a rant about the attacker's return to Manchester United.
Ronaldo was signed by United at the end of the summer transfer window, scoring 18 goals in his first campaign back at Old Trafford. But the Portuguese attacker has been criticised at frequent points of the season with the Red Devils going another year without a trophy.
The 37-year-old is a former team-mate of Rooney's with the duo helping United to win three Premier League titles between 2003 and 2009. Rooney appeared as a guest on Monday Night Football this week and made it clear Ronaldo's return has not worked out.
"He’s scored goals, he’s scored important goals in the Champions League early on in the season, he scored the hat-trick against Tottenham, but I think if you’re looking to the future of the club, you have to go with younger, hungry players to do the best and lift Manchester United over these next two or three years," Rooney said.
"Obviously Cristiano is getting on a bit, he certainly isn’t the player he was when he was in his 20s, and that happens, that’s football. He’s a goal threat but the rest of the game they need more, they need young hungry players."
The now Derby boss commemorated his appearance on Sky Sports' flagship show by posting a photo of himself in the studio alongside Jamie Carragher and presenter Dave Jones. As the caption for the post, he wrote: "Great night on Monday Night Football".

It appears that Ronaldo has become aware of Rooney's rant about him though and used the Instagram post to hit back at his former team-mate. The United star replied to Rooney's post with the comment "Two jealous" and the raised eye emoji.
Ronaldo has returned to training following a bout of illness and is expected to feature against Everton on Saturday. He will be out to prove Rooney wrong as United attempt to salvage their season.
