Cristiano Ronaldo was not best pleased with team-mate Joao Cancelo during Portugal’s shock defeat to South Korea on Friday afternoon. The unattached star laid into his Manchester City counterpart despite Portugal’s safe passage to the World Cup knockout rounds in Qatar, amid another dramatic group finale.

Portugal were as good as through before kick-off on Friday after a hard-fought victory over Ghana and a comfortable 2-0 win over Uruguay. Manager Fernando Santos made several changes to the line-up that went out to face South Korea, who needed all three points to stand any chance of progressing.

It was shaping up to be a long couple of hours for the Asian outfit when winger Ricardo Horta netted within five minutes, but the pendulum swung before half-time. Kim Young-gwon pulled one back for the South Koreans and, with the knockout stages in their sights, they kicked on in the second half.

With the new-look Portugal line-up struggling to gel, Ronaldo gave Cancelo an earful over his tendency to cut back onto his right foot before delivering crosses into the box.

The incident wasn’t picked up by BBC cameras but former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy was on hand to explain. “Ronaldo’s having a go at him, too many chops,” he said. “Put the ball in, he [Ronaldo] made his movement. Strikers will tell you when somebody chops and chops you have to keep changing your run.”

Ronaldo may have been struggling with Cancelo’s unorthodox style of play, given that he’s a right-footer on the left-hand side. The Man City star switched flanks against South Korea to make room for Diogo Dalot on the right, who has performed superbly for Manchester United this campaign.

Ronaldo was eventually substituted just after the hour mark with Andre Silva coming on to take his place, while Cancelo played the full 90 minutes. There was still to be major drama in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, however, as Hwang Hee-chan produced a neat finish to send South Korea through to the knockout rounds on goals scored.

Naturally, that spelled bad news for Uruguay and Ghana in the other Group H fixture. La Celeste won the game 2-0 but they needed another goal to edge ahead of South Korea, and despite furious shouts for a penalty in the closing stages, they couldn’t build on their lead as Luis Suarez burst into tears on the sidelines.

Ronaldo appeared displeased when he took his spot on the bench on Friday but manager Santos later explained that it was due to an altercation with a South Korean player. “Cristiano Ronaldo left upset because a Korean player was sending him away and Pepe even had to intervene,” he claimed.

“I heard what the Korean player was saying. If you see the images, you see Pepe going after the South Korean because of that.”
