Sergio Romero has hinted he’d love to return to Manchester United during a candid chat with fans outside Old Trafford. The Argentina international was recently in attendance as the club beat Sheriff 3-0 on Thursday night thanks to goals from Diogo Dalot, Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo. And it seems as though he still loves his old side, despite a difficult exit last year.

Manchester United signed Romero back in the summer transfer window of 2015, when Louis van Gaal was manager, with David De Gea being linked with a move to Real Madrid at the time.

And though the Argentine wouldn’t always be No 1 during his stint at Old Trafford, he still became something of a club hero among their supporters.

Romero rarely let United down and played a key role as they won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017, while he also helped them to FA Cup and Carabao Cup triumphs as well.

The current Boca Juniors star sat in the stands to watch United’s victory over Sheriff on Thursday.

And, after the game, the goalkeeper was quoted as saying ‘hopefully quick’, per @Mazietilly, when asked when he was coming back.

Man Utd transfers: Plans for next three signings are damning on Solskjaer

Romero loved playing for United, even if he spent the majority of his time at the club being stuck behind De Gea in the pecking order.

He was linked with a shock return earlier in the year, shortly after his contract at Venezia came to an end.

But that didn’t happen, with Romero instead moving back to his homeland of Argentine with Boca Juniors – who recently won the Argentinean league title with Marcos Rojo skippering them to victory.

While the former United star has hinted he’d love to go back to his old side, it doesn’t appear any transfer is currently on the cards.

United’s goalkeeping department is well-stocked, with De Gea still keeping the No 1 jersey despite many feeling he doesn’t suit Erik ten Hag’s style of play.

Tom Heaton is a capable deputy, while the Premier League giants also recruited Martin Dubravka on loan from Newcastle back in the summer.

United have Dean Henderson spending the season on loan at Nottingham Forest, too, and he’s expected to compete with De Gea for a starting spot when he comes back at the end of the season.

Romero left United under a cloud last year, however.

The 35-year-old fell out with old boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after being denied a move to Everton the previous summer.

And it meant Romero spent his final season with United merely training, instead of making his way onto the field on a regular basis.

He’d later open up on his difficult time with the Red Devils upon moving to Italy, saying: “It was a strange year for me, but I trained all year at Manchester United. Some days I was training by myself, because the squad was preparing for a game.

“I feel good, I worked in Argentina too and want to prove I’m the same Sergio who was at Sampdoria and then Manchester.”

Romero’s wife, meanwhile, launched a blistering attack on United when they failed to let her husband move to Everton in 2020.

Eliana Guercio said shortly afterwards: “It was a very stressful day for us. I have to say that I am sad, very sad on one and happy on the other hand.

“I am sad because Sergio deserved the opportunity to go to another club, he has shown what he can do and he worked every day.

“Right now he is training, just like he has been every day since he was in Argentina because he is a professional.

“He loves what he does and gives his all every day. I have known ever since I met about his passion and his work and his family obviously.

“It is a very sad day because he desired the chance to go to another club. He has worked hard every day for this, because he gives his all for United and I think that his chances of playing for United have gone down.

“This doesn’t sound right to me. It doesn’t appear honest or professional or serious that they have to let him go. I am very sad because of this.

“On the other hand I am happy because all of the fans of the club have shown all their amazing support.”
