Jose Mourinho has demanded more from Tammy Abraham despite the fact the 24-year-old scored Roma’s winner against Empoli on Monday night. 

Abraham scored in the 71st minute of their Serie A clash at the Carlo Castellani Stadium to secure a 2-1 victory and end Roma’s three-game winless streak.

Mourinho praised Abraham for beating Empoli keeper Guglielmo Vicario but said the former Chelsea striker must do more for his team when they are chasing the ball.

Speaking after Roma’s triumph on Monday night, Mourinho told Sky Sports Italia that Abraham must push himself ‘mentally’.  

Mourinho said: ‘He has to do it. He has to drop deep when the team needs him. Maybe he can struggle more mentally to do it, but that is also the mission.’

However, Mourinho did praise Abraham for scoring against Empoli goalkeeper Vicario on Monday night. 

The Portuguese manager said Vicario looked world class during their Serie A clash at the Carlo Castellani Stadium.

Abraham has rediscovered his best form in Italy – having transferred from Premier League giants Chelsea last season

Speaking after the game, Mourinho added: ‘I must say that scoring goals against Vicario was difficult, he looked like the best goalkeeper in the world.’

Abraham picked up a career-high 27 goals in 53 games last year as Roma won the Europa Conference League, the club’s first European honour since 1961.

The 24-year-old was the club’s top scorer and quickly became a favourite among the supporters in the Italian capital. 

Abraham previously spoke about how felt joining Roma was the ‘best decision’ of his life after struggling to cement a place in the Chelsea XI.

Speaking to Corriere Dello Sport, Abraham said: ‘The best decision of my life was coming here. No rush to get back into the Premier League. I want to score one more goal than last season.’

‘I hope I can beat my personal goal record. Without haste, however, because I don’t fee yet one hundred percent ready. On the other hand, at this point in pre-season, no one is.’

The England star played 82 times for Chelsea and briefly was first choice under Frank Lampard before the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku arrived.
