Rodri’s ‘rubbish’ comment as McTominay helps Scotland beat Spain
Manchester City and Spain star Rodri has hit out at Scotland’s “rubbish” tactics in Tuesday’s Euro 2024 qualifier. Steve Clark’s side shocked the 2008 and 2012 winners thanks to a Scott McTominay brace at Hampden Park.
Manchester United star McTominay netted once in each half to give Scotland their first win over Spain since 1984. The 26-year-old now has four goals in two games during the international break.
Scotland’s quest to qualify for next year’s Euros in Germany has got off to the perfect start, with a 3-0 win over Cyprus on Saturday before Tuesday’s memorable victory. But it hasn’t gone down well in the Spain camp.
Rodri slammed Scotland’s style of play when speaking to the media after the match. He told Viaplay: “It’s the way they play – for me, it’s a bit rubbish.

“It’s always wasting time, they provoke you, they always fall. For me, this is not football. The referee has to take a part in this but he said nothing.
“It’s a bit frustrating because we want to win and it’s difficult because they waste time, waste time. It is what it is. They have their weapons, we have our weapons, and we will learn for next time.”
Spain defender David Garcia claimed the length of the grass at Hampden Park contributed to the defeat. He told Marca: “We already saw that the grass was too long and that cost us.”
However, Rodri says that is no excuse and that his team-mates must look at themselves for their performance. He added: “They played a good game, the grass is no excuse, they have their conditions.

“The first goal has conditioned us a lot. They played with five behind, tightly closed. We had options, but the ball didn’t go in.
“We have tried, two posts, one from a very clear set piece. We must polish those oversights, those errors that are expensive.
“The feeling is that it is one of those days that it you’re doing well, but it doesn’t quite come in. There are no doubts at all, we don’t want to start with that, please. Many things have been done well.
“The score counts, we have to improve that forgetfulness, specific errors that have penalized us. This is a collective effort.”
