Roberto Mancini, 56, is an Italian football manager and former player. As a player, Mancini was best known for his time at Sampdoria, where he played more than 550 matches and helped the team win the Serie A league title, four Coppa Italia titles and the European Cup Winners’ Cup. In 1997, after 15 years at Sampdoria, Mancini left the club to join Lazio where he won more cups for the team before becoming an assistant to Sven-Goran Eriksson at Lazio towards the end of his time at the club.

Mancini’s first manager role was at Fiorentina when he was aged just 36, before taking over at Lazio some years later.

In 2009, Mancini was appointed Manchester City manager, where he is widely credited with instilling a winning culture at the club, taking City from a mid-table team to the top of English football.

During the 2010-2011 season, his first full campaign at City, Mancini guided the club to Champions League football and the FA cup – the club’s first major trophy in 35 years. He was also in charge when the Citizens won their first Premier League title in 2012.

Regarded as a football cup specialist, Mancini has reached at least a semi-final of a major national competition in every season he’s been a manager, from 2002 to 2014.

Despite success at club level when he was a player, Mr Mancini never became a regular player for Italy international.

The Italy manager is widely regarded as being one of the best in the business, and there’s no doubt England have an uphill battle when it comes to Sunday’s game.

Mancini lifted Italy out of the shock and humiliation of not qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

The former City and Inter Milan boss has inspired a remarkable 33-game unbeaten streak that stretches back to 2018; a 1-0 Nations League defeat to Portugal.

The presence of key and experienced players on Azzuri’s side, such as Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Marco Verratti, and even Lorenzo Insigne who turned 30 not long ago, means they’re a hard side to beat.

Mancini recently further showcased his versatility while experimenting with a new team setup during a World Cup qualification game against Lithuania.

With just four goals conceded in qualification and no goals conceded in three games, Mancini looks to have found the right balance for his team that could see them emerge victorious from Qatar 2022.

Mancini was unable to hide his delight earlier this year at the progress of his team and their “ability to express good football” following the crushing defeat three years ago.

Mancini said: “In Italy, we have never lacked the players, maybe in some roles in some periods you have have more or less options.

“But the important players have always been there, you just had to give them a chance.

“The Italian lads are good, you just had to give them confidence and a chance to play.”

European champions in 1968 and runners up in 2000 and 2012, Mancini will undoubtedly be eager to continue restoring pride to a footballing nation on Sunday night.
