Robert Pires identifies “opportunity” for Arsenal due to Liverpool struggles
Arsenal legend Robert Pires is adamant his former club are on the right track under Mikel Arteta.
And he reckons they could reach the Premier League top four this season – with Liverpool’s recent struggles giving him hope.
The Gunners endured a miserable start to the campaign but have come on strong in recent weeks with an impressive turnaround.
Pires, a key member of Arsene Wenger’s fabled Invincibles, reckons it is not too late for Arteta’s young side to mount a top four charge.
And he says Liverpool’s recent downturn proves that there is a chance to be taken over the remainder of the campaign.
Pires told The Sun: “Mikel is young and needs time to implement his ideas but I believe that once he has built his team, Arsenal will be competitive and ready to go toe-to-toe with the great English clubs.
"It’s hard but I would not even rule out that they finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League this year because things change quickly in the league.
“If I see Liverpool having tough periods, I’m telling myself there is an opportunity for Arsenal to grab.
“They only need to get back to winning ways and then maintain the consistency. Then anything can happen.
“It’s imperative the supporters stay patient because Arsenal are in transition but the club’s future under Arteta looks bright.”
After moving within five points of the top four, Arteta refused to discuss their chances this week.
Arteta said: “I don't want to look at the table.
“I want to look at ourselves, how we can get better, the reason we are playing better and winning football matches.
“Tomorrow is another day, train, improve in many areas and see where we get.”
