Robbie Savage once used referee Graham Poll’s private toilet to take a poo before allegedly leaving the door open and not flushing.

Savage, now a pundit, was known for his energetic and all-action persona which landed him in controversy several times throughout his career.

And on one occasion back in April 2002 while playing for Leicester City, the tough-tackling midfielder broke protocol when he used the official's toilet.

The incident took place 10 minutes before kick-off in a game against Aston Villa, where allegedly Savage kicked up a stink in match official Poll’s designated toilet.

At the time, The Sun newspaper claimed that Savage left the door open and refused to flush the chain.

Savage was hit with a whopping £10,000 fine for improper conduct, the equivalent of two weeks’ wages, due to FA rules preventing players from entering the referee’s dressing room without permission.

But the ex-midfielder has since revealed he was suffering from bad diarrhoea after taking antibiotics for a cut on his leg.

The former Blackburn and Derby County man claimed both Leicester cubicles were occupied and so he rushed to use the referees’ facilities, with Poll being aware at the time.

He wrote in his 2010 autobiography: “Everyone was laughing. I came charging out of the toilet because the bell had gone. And no, I hadn’t washed my hands because of the rush I was in.

“During the game, Poll was laughing about the whole thing. He didn’t seem angry at all.

“That night, it was the Player of the Year dinner and my boss Micky Adams asked: ‘What have you done? Poll has made a complaint that you went into his room without permission and used his toilet. We’re fining you two weeks’ wages'.”

Savage went on to say he still “didn’t like” Poll nearly a decade after the incident.

He added: “He thinks he is pretty special and I’m not quite sure why.”
