Robbie Fowler ‘answers prayers’ by replacing ‘exhausted’ Neil Warnock in dugout

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has ‘answered the prayers’ of a non-league club after veteran manager Neil Warnock was forced to pull out of his next managerial role.

Warnock, who guided Huddersfield Town to Championship safety after coming out of retirement at the age of 74, began his managerial career at non-league Gainsborough Trinity in the early 1980s and remains fond of the Lincolnshire club.

He had been due to manager a Gainsborough XI against a team of Premier League Legends, but has been forced to pull out of the commitment due to ill health.

Trinity, who play in the Northern Premier League (Step 3 of the non-league pyramid) issued a statement: “Neil Warnock has made the difficult decision to step away from his media commitments this summer, including his planned emotional return to where it all began, the Northolme.

“Suffering from exhaustion and ill health, having over-exerted himself in guiding Huddersfield to Championship safety, Warnock had left a massive hole to fill.”

However, the club has secured a very able replacement. The flamboyant statement continued: “How do you replace the legendary manager that went from Non-League to Premier League? You send out a distress flare, and pick up the phone to the man affectionately known in some quarters as God. Who else was going to answer our prayers?

“No less than Robbie Fowler! Placed eighth in the all-time top Premier League goal scorers' list, capped more than 25 times by his country, representing Liverpool FC, Leeds United and Manchester City, Robbie Fowler answered the clubs SOS and will now take Neil Warnock's position in the dugout managing the Trinity eleven, to face off against the Premier League Legends.

“A real favourite, Fowler is one of the modern day great centre forwards and with an avid Liverpool following in and around the Gainsborough area. Fowler's involvement will add to the excitement levels surrounding the game.”

The match, at Gainsborough’s Northolme ground on Saturday, June 3 (1pm), has been arranged as part of the club’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

The Premier League Legends team will include Carlton Palmer, Colin Hendry, Michael Dawson, Pascal Chimbonda, Luke Chadwick, and Grant Holt.
