Rob McElhenney confirms Wrexham break National League rule weeks after promotion

Wrexham's chances of a double promotion

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has already taken advantage of one of the benefits of winning promotion from the National League by launching a new black third kit for the forthcoming season.

The Red Dragons will start their next campaign in the Football League for the first time in 15 years after clinching the National League title and automatic promotion with a record 111 points.

One of the existing rules in the fifth tier of English football is that member clubs are forbidden from playing in an all-black kit. But no such restriction applies to EFL League Two and Wrexham have wasted no time in making the most of their new-found freedom.

Revealing the menacing new kit on social media, McElhenney tweeted: “I’ve been trying to get this one made for 3 years. Under national league rule, we couldn’t have a black kit. Not a problem anymore ;)”.

The Red Dragons have launched both new away and third kits at the same time. The first-choice away kit is white with a wide green stipe running down the middle, flanked either side by thinner red stripes.

Both kits feature new shirt sponsors United Airlines on the front, with the solitary word ‘United’ printed across the chest.

All three of Wrexham’s kits for the 2023/24 season feature an embossed ‘WRECSAM’ on the reverse, and a Welsh dragon on the nape.

The black third strip pays tribute to the city’s coal mining past, with a pattern on the front inspired by the traditional industry.

Both shirts will be made available to purchase online from 10am on Thursday, but the club has already had to increase capacity of the previously released home shirt to cope with high demand.

As a result, customers are currently limited to two shirts per order online, which replicates the same policy now in place in the club store. Wrexham has also said that they will be monitoring people who attempt to make multiple orders.

With interest in the North Wales outfit currently at unprecedented levels, the club has warned season ticket holders who had made pre-orders that it could take a number of weeks to fulfil all orders.

Interest in Wrexham has sky-rocketed following the success of the Disney Plus series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ and their subsequent highly-documented return to the Football League.

The Red Dragons will seek to expand their brand further later this month when they embark on a pre-season tour of the US.
