Rivals mock ‘cringe’ Arsenal ‘ultras’ over pyros and drumming vs Crystal Palace

Arsenal’s rivals have torn into their fan base after a group of ‘ultras’ congregated in a tunnel near the Emirates Stadium.

Optimism and belief within the club has been at its highest since Arsene Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’ dominated the Premier League. Mikel Arteta’s side hammered managerless Crystal Palace 4-1 to go into the international break with an eight point lead over Manchester City.

But with Arsenal continuing to tear it up on the pitch, rival fans have been deriding their supporters away from the stadium. And a small group of Arsenal ultras have been slammed by rival Premier League supporters.

This season, some Arsenal fan groups have combined forces to create a European style band of ‘ultras’. These fans travel home and away, armed with drums, banners, snoods, and, sometimes, with smoke canisters and flares.

Before their evisceration of Palace, the fan group, all donned in black outfits, chanted in unison to the beat of a drum, while waving around some smoke canisters. Most of the fans appeared to be in the 18-25 age range, but there were some older supporters accompanying some younger fans, presumably their children, within the group.

And while there were many fans praising the group for trying to create and harness a loud atmosphere, home and away, lots more rival supporters could not resist having a dig. "English fans forcing ultra culture…I cringed a lot," one fan wrote on social media.

"Arsenal FC and their skinny jeans wearing ultras," another added, while drawing attention to the snug choice of attire from many of the Arsenal supporters. "Trying so hard to emulate European ultras, bless their cotton socks," a Tottenham fan wrote, before another added: "I find this lot so funny because they’ve only turned up when they were top of the league."

Meanwhile, another Premier League fan urged the Gunners to stop, tweeting: "They have to drop the gimmick man it’s so embarrassing," before another fan wrote: "ok, I kind of understand now why our supporters see this as cringe."

Either way, Arsenal fans will not care one bit, as they recovered from their Europa League disappointment to move even further ahead of City.
