Rival fans say ‘told you so’ as Forest sack recruitment team after £150m spree

Nottingham Forest have sacked their recruitment team after spending almost £150million on 23 players during the summer.

The newly promoted side recruited heavily during the summer as they prepared for a return to the Premier League, completely overhauling their playing squad. However, less than two months after the transfer window closed, Forest have sacked head of recruitment George Syrianos and chief scout Andy Scott, who were both heavily involved in the club's summer transfer business.

Their departures coming following the arrival of Filippo Giraldi as sporting director last week, with owner Evangelos Marinakis understood to have been involved in the decision to part ways.

It had been reported last week that Forest were considering sacking manager Steve Cooper as well as the entire recruitment team, before Cooper penned a new contract.

Syrianos was involved in several deals which saw players arrive at the City Ground from the Bundesliga, including Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who arrived from Union Berlin for £18.5million.

Prior to joining Forest in the summer of 2021, Syrianos had worked in Germany for Stuttgart as the club's chief analyst. Meanwhile, Scott had scouting roles with Watford, Swansea City and Brentford before Forest hired him back in January.

The shake-up of the club's recruitment and scouting departments comes after Cooper had been strongly linked with the sack following the recent 4-0 defeat to bottom of the table Leicester City.

Cooper has instead extended his contract through until the summer of 2025, having been appointed in September last year before guiding the club to promotion via the play-offs, earning a top flight return after 23 years away.

His side currently sit 19th in the Premier League after picking up just five points from their opening nine matches of the campaign. Their tally of seven goals is the joint-second lowest in the league, with Wolverhampton Wanderers the only side to have scored less.

Forest visit Wolves on Saturday hoping to boost their goal tally as well as searching for their second league win of the season and first since beating West Ham United on matchday two.

Prior to Monday night's home draw against Aston Villa, Forest had lost five matches in a row in the league with a combined aggregate scoreline of 18-4.
