Rishi Sunak prompts backlash with tweet after England lose World Cup final

England suffer Women’s World Cup final heartache against Spain

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak prompted a backlash on social media after tweeting a message of support to the England squad after their heartache in the Women’s World Cup final on Sunday. The Lionesses fell at the final hurdle after being defeated 1-0 by Spain in the showpiece event.

Sunak had already been criticised for refusing to fly to Australia to cheer on Sarina Wiegman’s team in person as he decided to send Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer instead. And he put himself in the firing line once again after Sunday’s showdown had come to an end.

“You left absolutely nothing out there @Lionesses,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “It wasn’t to be, but you’ve already secured your legacy as game changers. We are all incredibly proud of you.” And his post ended with three lion emojis. But England fans were having none of it from the Prime Minster as the backlash came thick and fast.

“I’m sure they are delighted with your ‘support’, your staged pics, and media team posts on this account,” replied Keith Hathaway. “Support like that, they can do without!” LFC Kev then penned: “They could’ve really done with your support but you sat at home.” And Peter West added: “Jog on lightweight. Couldn’t be bothered to turn up. If you’d had one of your holiday homes handy would that have made it easier?”

Meanwhile, some people on the social media platform made it personal and questioned Sunak’s ability to lead the country. Nicholas Smith wrote: “You’ve secured your legacy as another charlatan Prime Minister who no-one is proud of.”

And Dave Lawrence added: “More attention seeking from the PM who could not be bothered to attend. If they meant anything, if the country meant anything you would have been there – but there was nothing in it for you was there!”

England were dominated during the first half of the World Cup final but almost took the lead when Lauren Hemp saw a fine effort strike the crossbar. The Lionesses eventually went behind just before the half hour mark as Olga Carmona swept the ball into the bottom corner of Mary Earps’ net after Lucy Bronze had been dispossessed in the centre of the pitch.

England introduced blockbuster star Lauren James at the interval and looked much better after the break as they went in search of an equaliser. And they stayed in the game when Earps saved a penalty from Jennifer Hermoso. But there was no way back for Wiegman’s team as England ultimately saw the chance to lift their first Women’s World Cup trophy pass them by.
