Rio Ferdinand threatens to strangle Sergio Aguero during Man City celebrations
Sergio Aguero tearful as he announces retirement
Rio Ferdinand threatened to strangle former rival Sergio Aguero during Manchester City’s Champions League winning celebrations. Striker Aguero spent 10 seasons in the Premier League with City scoring 184 league goals from 275 games – but one goal will be remembered above the rest.
The Argentine forward led City to five league titles as they began their domination of English football, but never won the Champions League. His first Premier League title came in the 2011-12 season, but with seconds remaining Manchester United believed that they had done enough to pip their city rivals to the title when their match at Sunderland finished.
Going into the final match of the season with both teams level on points Wayne Rooney’s goal gave United victory at Sunderland. With City being held 2-2 at the Etihad by QPR celebrations began in the North East and United believing they had won another league title.
However, there was a dramatic twist in the tale with Aguero creating a forward move with a one-two before taking a touch inside the box and scoring one of most famous Premier League four minutes into injury time. The goal earned City a 3-2 win and their first league title since 1968 and maiden under their Abu Dhabi owners.
However, memories of that day 11 years ago are obviously still raw for Ferdinand after the United players were left devastated as the celebrations began at City. Aguero was in Istanbul to watch City clinch their first Champions League crown with a 1-0 victory over Inter Milan – thanks to Rodri’s 68th minute strike.
As the celebrations began Aguero joined the BT Sport summarisers, including former opponent Ferdinand, to discuss the achievement. The former United defender said: “I’ve got to be honest, you broke my heart man (in relation to that goal to win the Premier League title).” Aguero replied: “Are you ok?” In which Ferdinand responded: “I’ll strange you.”

City’s first Champions League win also earnt Aguero a payday after the Argentine revealed on Twitter that he had placed a £7,500 bet on his former side beating Inter Milan in the final – winning £15,670. The Istanbul win victory was another historic moment for City’s chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak, but Aguero’s goal to win the Premier League title 11 years ago remains a vivid memory.
City commemorated his goal by building a statue of Aguero outside the Etihad last year to mark the 10-year anniversary of the title. “It’s the moment that changed everything,” al-Mubarak told the BBC. “If you look at the 10 years since, that was the moment that introduced what lies ahead. He is absolutely deserving, and I think, a legend for this club.”
