Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand says his friendship with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shouldn’t prevent him from calling on the Red Devils to sack the Norwegian. Ferdinand’s comments come after former team-mate Gary Neville backed the United boss once again, despite the team losing their fourth Premier League game of the season on Saturday.
United looked second best throughout their clash with Manchester City at the weekend and were defeated 2-0 after an own-goal from Eric Bailly and a strike from Bernardo Silva.
The defeat leaves United nine points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea and five points adrift of the top four.
Solskjaer came under further pressure after the game, with many fans calling for the club to give the boss his marching orders.
And Ferdinand believes it’s time for the 48-year-old to go.
“We can sit here and say, ‘he’s your mate, you can’t speak about him or you can’t say it might be his time’s up now,’” Ferdinand told his Vibe with FIVE YouTube channel.

“You have to be honest with what you see because, if it was someone else, I would say it.
“I don’t get this, ‘you can’t say this about a manager,’ because people are quick to say it about a player – ‘oh his time’s up at the club,’ or ‘he should never wear the shirt again.’
“But you can’t say that about a manager. What’s the difference?
“It’s what’s best for this football [club]. I just feel that maybe it’s time now for the baton to be handed on to take us on.”
Former Man Utd right-back Neville had again defended Solskjaer in the aftermath of his side’s latest defeat and insists the club won’t sack their boss.
“The club aren’t going to do anything here,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“The plan all season has been to stick with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer until the end of the season. And that’s where I’m at, even after Saturday.”
Despite United’s egregious run of form, Neville has been a keen advocator of Solskjaer continuing as boss this season.
And last month the former England international implied that his role as Solskjaer’s friend is more important than his role as a pundit.

“I’ve got Manchester United fans on my social media all of the time saying, ‘Gary, he’s your mate, you won’t call him out.’
“No I won’t. I won’t call Steve Kean out or Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. I’m not going to come on this show 11 years later and ask for a manager to be sacked.
“It’s never going to happen. He’s a club legend – he’s my team-mate. I actually like him a lot.
“I’m really happy to admit I won’t ask for any manager or Ole to be sacked.
“Me being a pundit is irrelevant compared to my position as a human being and someone’s friend. At least I admit it.”
