- Rio Ferdinand has praised Sanchez for preventing a goal scoring opportunity
Rio Ferdinand has praised Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for ‘bringing down’ Callum Wilson during their clash with Newcastle on Saturday night.
Referee David Coote gave Sanchez a red card in the 90+2 minute of the game after he clipped Wilson outside the box and denied him of a clear goalscoring opportunity.
However, Ferdinand said the goalkeeper ‘did well’ to take out Wilson as the forward would have denied Brighton of a point – with the game ending 1-1.

Sanchez was responsible for taking Wilson down in the 90+2 minute of the game. The goalkeeper came charging out and clipped the forward as he went round him.
Coote initially waved for play to continue but later awarded the goalkeeper a red card after consulting the pitch-side monitor.
As a result, Brighton defender Lewis Dunk went in goal for the five remaining minutes of injury-time.

Speaking about the decision, BT Sport pundit Steve Sidwell said: ‘It was quite a surprise it wasn’t blown up. Especially how Callum Wilson reacts. But he goes past him and there is obviously a connection.
‘As he said in his interview, it just sums the luck of Newcastle and his performance of the season up. It’s a clear break, he wants to score and he gets pulled back.
Ferdinand added: ‘I thought it was quite a wise decision for him to come out. I think initially I thought he should have probably stayed but once he made the decision I think he did well to bring him down and stop the goal-scoring opportunity.’

Following the consultation, the referee upgraded it to a red card – putting Brighton down to 10
Wilson also shared his thoughts on the incident, claiming his side did not get justice for the incident.
Speaking after the game he said: ‘That’s the way things are going at the moment. Through on goal and the goal keeper takes me out.
The worrying thing is, it wasn’t blown up first time. We got the right decision in the end but nevertheless it’s not (justice).
‘If it was a penalty it would be different but it’s obviously a free kick and they have the opportunity to defend it again.’
Brighton boss Graham Potter also felt that Sanchez had denied Newcastle a goal scoring opportunity.

The manager told BT Sport: ‘Up to the goal we had really good control and pushed them back.
‘We did our best to keep them quiet and their goal changed the complexion of the game. It is nigh on impossible to control a Premier League game for 90 minutes. A point is good.
‘It looked like Callum Wilson was through, it wasn’t the best action from us, but you have to credit Newcastle who came here with a plan.
‘While it is still 1-0, you have to keep fighting. We will get better for that experience, it is something we have to go through.’
