Rio Ferdinand has said that Manchester United’s equaliser in the derby was right to stand as Marcus Rashford didn’t ‘impact any of the defenders’.

United equalised through Bruno Fernandes in controversial style – with Manchester City’s players protesting that Rashford was offside and interfering with the play.

However, the goal stood as the England forward was deemed to have not impacted the play, or any of the defenders, and United went on to win 2-1.

Bruno Fernandes’ equaliser was allowed to stand after Marcus Rashford left the ball

When asked on punditry duty about the decision, Ferdinand did not hesitate with his response.

Ferdinand said: ‘It’s a goal. Marcus [Rashford] doesn’t impact any of the defenders’ running strides, running patterns or positions and I think it’s intelligent from him, he’s probably had a shout from Bruno.’

Rashford was played through by a pass from Casemiro and appeared to be chasing after the through-ball.

Just when it seemed the 25-year-old was about to pull the trigger, he left the ball for Fernandes who slotted home.

Ferdinand continued:  ‘It’s a great pass initially, he is offside but it’s a fantastic finish after that. Cool, calm, collected, clinical but I don’t think any of the defenders can really impact this play.’

Ferdinand celebrated the win with Paul Scholes after the game and declared that United are ‘in the title race’.

Pep Guardiola was not so happy after the game and strangely declared that his side ‘cannot win the Premier League’.
