Rio Ferdinand has declared Manchester City his new favourites for the Premier League title after originally backing Chelsea to claim the crown this season.

The former Manchester United defender admits he has been greatly impressed by the way Pep Guardiola’s side ‘dominated’ title rivals Chelsea and Liverpool away in their last two League games – winning 1-0 at Stamford Bridge and then drawing 2-2 at Anfield on Sunday.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea hold top spot after banking a late win over Southampton on Saturday, with Liverpool second, but Ferdinand insists City, one point back in third, have proved they will again be the team to beat at the end of the campaign.

‘It ebbs and flows man!’ the former Manchester United and England defender told his FIVE YouTube channel.

‘In the first four of five games of the season, I was sitting there and thinking Chelsea are the team to beat.

‘Three of four games later and I’m thinking Man City are the team to beat. They have looked seriously impressive against the big teams.

Manchester City secured a battling draw with title rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday

‘They dominated Chelsea away [last weekend], they dominated Liverpool in the first half [on Sunday] and should have seen the game off.

‘They might be a bit disappointed with a 2-2 draw but they look the most impressive to me. They look formidable at times.

‘There’s no doubt they’re going to dominate 99 per cent of their games but it’s just about the finishing.’

Ferdinand added: ‘When they get over that element and get that right, I think they are the team to beat.
