Rio Ferdinand claims Mason Mount will be furious at being dropped by Thomas Tuchel in his first match in charge of Chelsea against Wolves on Wednesday.

Mount has become an integral player to the Chelsea side over the last season-and-a-half, starting the last 13 Premier League matches as Frank Lampard made him one of the main men at Stamford Bridge.

But Tuchel dropped the England youngster – who was named captain against Luton in the FA Cup on the weekend by the recently sacked Lampard – to the bench for the Premier League clash against Wolves.

Mount was demoted to the bench along with Tammy Abraham and Reece James after Tuchel opted for experience by picking Jorginho, Olivier Giroud and Cesar Azpilicueta as he begun a new era as Chelsea boss.

Ferdinand told BT Sport: ‘He’s gone with experience and people he knows a bit better.

‘I’m sure Mason Mount will be seething, same with Reece James and Christian Pulisic – who he brought through at Dortmund.’

Peter Crouch also admitted his surprise by Tuchel’s decision to drop one of Chelsea’s most in-form players in Mount.

‘It’s a change of philosophy now. He’s dropped Mount and James – how must Mason feel?’ Crouch added.

Tuchel’s decision to drop Mount to the bench left many fans and pundits talking on Wednesday

The decision to sack club legend Lampard has infuriated many Chelsea fans following their first real blip under the inexperienced manager.

The Blues started the day in 10th place having lost five of their last eight Premier League matches, and Roman Abramovich wasn’t afraid to pull the trigger with the club’s hopes of Champions League football in danger.

And he immediately replaced Lampard with German boss Tuchel, who has made a name for himself at Borussia Dortmund and most recently Paris Saint-Germain, where he has worked with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

And both Ferdinand and Crouch insist they weren’t surprised by Abramovich’s decision to sack Lampard given the owner’s reputation and their summer spending spree not paying off.

Rio Ferdinand believes that England youngster Mount will be ‘seething’ at Tuchel dropping him

Ferdinand said: ‘Roman and his board will believe it’s the right thing to do. Lampard is still respected. Chelsea have a model and this is how they operate.’

Meanwhile, Crouch argued: ‘It’s the first blip he’s had but it boils down to the money they’ve spent – for example the situation with Kepa. The owner will be looking at what’s been spent and think it’s not been good enough.’

Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy all started against Wolves, meaning Tuchel instantly put his faith in five of Chelsea’s big summer signings while Timo Werner was named on the bench amid an alarming slump in front of goal.

And Chelsea’s summer signings have been urged by Ferdinand and Crouch to take centre stage and get the Blues out of this slump having lost five of their last eight Premier League matches.

‘Five of the six signings are playing today. Frank was trying to build a legacy with youth but now the players have got to roll up their sleeves and push for a place in his plans,’ former United centre back Ferdinand said.

Crouch added: ‘His remit will be to get the best out of the players that they’ve signed this summer. They’re all top players but not performed.’
