Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has revealed that he has texted Raphael Varane to try and convince him to join the club this summer. United have made Varane their top defensive transfer target this summer but are yet to agree a deal with Real Madrid for his services.

United have turned their attention to their defensive needs, having agreed a £73million deal with Borussia Dortmund for Jadon Sancho.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign a long-term partner for Harry Maguire in central defence and Varane is the name at the top of the club’s list.

United have tried to sign the 28-year-old twice before and it appears that it could be a case of third time lucky this summer.

Varane has 12 months left on his Real Madrid contract but has rejected the terms of a new deal to push for a transfer.

According to ESPN, after Varane made it clear he wants out Real have dropped their asking price from £60m (€70m) to around £43m (€50m) and United are ‘close’ to finalising a move.

That piece of business will please former United defender Ferdinand who explained on Monday that he had already done his bit in trying to convince the France international to move to Manchester.

During a Q&A session on Instagram, a fan asked Ferdinand: “Can you drop Varane a text since you were his idol?”

Ferdinand replied: “Already have done. Agent Ferdy,” alongside a pair of binoculars.

Varane is now set to think properly about his future following France’s elimination from Euro 2020 on penalties by Switzerland last week.

While United appear the obvious frontrunners for his signature, Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with the defender.

If PSG pip United to Varane then they could move for one of their other reported targets, Villarreal’s Pau Torres, Sevilla’s Jules Koude and Atalanta’s Christian Romero.

Ferdinand is confident that Varane is the man for the job, though, and wants his former club to do whatever it takes to sign him.

“He brings an absolute winning mentality. I think he’s played in 14 finals and won 14,” he said on his Vibe With Five YouTube channel.

“He knows how to win, he’s got great experience. He’s an unbelievable specimen.

“Alongside Maguire he needs somebody with pace, the way they play… he will bring authority to the backline.”
