Rio Ferdinand: Harry Kane needs to leave Tottenham to win trophies
Rio Ferdinand again says Harry Kane needs to LEAVE Tottenham ‘if he wants to win trophies’ as he calls on striker to clarify whether he’s happy finishing his career as the Premier League’s top goalscorer but with no major prizes
- Harry Kane became Tottenham’s record goalscorer on Sunday against Man City
- Re-started debate about Kane’s career legacy should he not win anything
- Rio Ferdinand said the Tottenham forward would have to leave to win a trophy
Rio Ferdinand has again said Harry Kane will have to leave Tottenham if he wants to end his career having won trophies.
Kane, 29, became the club’s record goalscorer on Sunday as he went past Jimmy Greaves’ record of 266 goals for Tottenham which has stood since 1970.
The goal also took Kane to 200 Premier League goals, becoming only the third man in the league’s history to achieve that feat as he moves ever closer to catching Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer, who finished their careers on 208 and 260 goals respectively.
However, Kane’s goalscoring feats also sought to ramp up the debate surrounding his future at Tottenham and whether he might choose to depart the club to finally end his major trophy hoodoo.
Weighing into the debate on his Vibe with Five podcast, Ferdinand – himself a serial winner with Manchester United – said Kane would have to leave the club if he wanted to win, but added that he might be content with becoming the Premier League’s record goalscorer and remaining with Tottenham.

The club had prepared an array of tributes to the England man in anticipation of his landmark moment
‘If he wants to win trophies I think he needs to leave Spurs and go to a team capable of winning – because I don’t see that happening at Spurs in the near future,’ he said.
‘No matter what happens he will go down as one of the best goal scorers this league has ever seen, no matter what. Because the guy just knows how to put the ball in the back of the net in so many different ways.’
Ferdinand urged Kane to come out and clarify his intentions for the remainder of his career, with speculation differing on whether or not Kane, who has just 18 months remaining on his Tottenham contract, wants to remain with his boyhood club.
‘We spoke about this before. I want to hear Harry say it,’ he said. ‘Would you be happy to finish your career with no trophies but as the highest goalscorer in the Premier League’s history? If he says yeah, then that’s it. Argument done. Whatever we say is irrelevant.

Ferdinand said Kane could be content with ending his career as having remained with Tottenham and becoming the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer
‘He’s going to target what he wants to achieve,’ he added. ‘Now some players would go, “no, no. This is about the team. I want to win the league or win trophies or whatever, if I could do both then great”.
‘But listen, it’s down to him. It’s horses for courses for certain individuals, everyone has their own desires. But now it’s time for Harry Kane to decide what that is.’
Kane himself has come close to ending his trophy hoodoo, notably when Tottenham lost to Liverpool in the final of the 2019 Champions League and when England were defeated by Italy at Wembley in Euro 2020.
It is not the first time Ferdinand has called on Kane to depart Tottenham to win trophies.
Kane – and Tottenham – came agonisingly close to winning the biggest club prize of them all in 2019
Kane went past the late Jimmy Greaves with his 267th strike for Tottenham on Sunday evening
Citing his own case in 2002 when he departed Leeds United for Manchester United to win the trophies he felt his ability deserved, Ferdinand said in 2019 that Kane should look to move on from Tottenham.
‘What are you in the game for? Are you in the game to be a one-club man or to win trophies? Do Spurs look like a team capable of winning trophies?’ he asked. ‘I don’t think so.
‘They were a better team a couple of years ago. Leeds is a similar example, I was maybe a year or two younger but I was in a team at a Champions League semi-final, nearly won the league, but I thought I had a better chance elsewhere and I had the opportunity to go.
‘I made a very quick decision to go and win trophies. Harry Kane is probably thinking about it and having those questions. They need answering soon.
‘He’s 26 and you only have a small window of opportunity, they come and go very quickly.’
