Rio Ferdinand drops major hint over Cristiano Ronaldo’s shirt number at Man Utd
Rio Ferdinand has dropped a major hint over Cristiano Ronaldo's new shirt number after his sensational return to Manchester United was confirmed.
United announced on Friday that they had agreed a deal with Juventus for the 36-year-old after seeing off interest from Manchester City.
The news was greeted with joy by the club's supporters, but attention soon turned to what shirt number Ronaldo will wear when he dons the famous red strip once again, with his iconic No.7 currently occupied by Edinson Cavani.
Ferdinand, who played with Ronaldo during his first spell at Old Trafford and was even involved in bringing CR7 back to the club, has dropped a huge hint over what digits the striker will wear upon his return.
"Just to think Cavani could be the back-up for Ronaldo, it’s unbelievable," Ferdinand gushed on his FIVE YouTube show as he reacted to United’s announcement.
"Cavani, I have to say, what a man! He saw who was coming to town and gave up the No.7 shirt."
Ferdinand, realising that he had perhaps given the game away, then started to backtrack.
"Maybe? I don’t know! Does he do that or not?"
Do you think Ronaldo should be given the No.7 shirt? Let us know in the comments section.
United fans certainly believe Ronaldo should be allowed to claim the No.7 shirt as his own.
One supporter wrote on Twitter: "Cavani must give Ronaldo that 7,i can't imagine this with some weird number. CR7 it's big brand."
Someone else said: "Cavani about to lose the number 7 Jersey to Ronaldo. Just GOAT things."
A third person added: "Someone should tell Martial to drop the no.9 for Cavani with immediate effect b’cos Ronaldo is coming for the no.7."
If Cavani does keep the No.7 shirt, Ronaldo will be left with limited options.
Alternative digits available include the No.12, No.15, No.24, No.28 and No.30.
The numbers 32, 33, 35, 36, 37, 38 and 40 are also free – but it's the No.28 that might appeal to Ronaldo most if he is unable to prise the No.7 from Cavani.
The Portuguese said he wanted to take 28 in 2003 when he first joined United but Sir Alex Ferguson wanted him to take the number with which he is now so inextricably linked.

Speaking to ESPN in 2017, Ronaldo explained: "I was surprised because I knew of all the great players who had worn that jersey.
"It was the start of my successful stage in football."
United will be hoping Ronaldo's success continues this season – regardless of what shirt number he ends up wearing.
