Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand echoed the sentiments of former teammate Gary Neville, saying he is “still trying to work out” what United’s strategy is. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side’s 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa was the club’s third defeat in four matches, having lost to Young Boys, West Ham, and Dean Smith’s respectively.
And both Neville and Ferdinand have been extremely critical of the Red Devils who fell to fourth place after the defeat against Villa.
The two former teammates both questioned the playing style and attacking strategy of Solskaer’s men, saying they cannot always identify what they are trying to do.
“With Ole’s team, I’m still trying to work out what the traits are with that team,” Ferdinand told FIVE’s YouTube channel.
“What are the go-to, certain fundamentals that make them click?

“Up until now, it’s always been, for me, maybe relying on a [Marcus] Rashford, or a Bruno or a [Paul] Pogba, to have that moment and I know there are phases of play, but they’re not phases of play where you see it consistently, always happening.
“I’d love to know what are those fundamentals that Ole is working on getting.”
Solskjaer is under intense pressure after the defeat at Old Trafford.
Villa defender Courtney Hause, who was deputising for United loanee Axel Tuanzebe who could not play against his parent club, scored a powerful header to secure the points for Villa.

United had a chance right at the end to secure a draw from the penalty spot, but Fernandes blasted his 93rd minute penalty over the cross bar.
United’s season started well with electric victories against Leeds United and Newcastle especially.
However, Neville even said he had his doubts with the team during their winning start of the season, questioning the attacking patterns and philosophy of the side.

“I said it even when we were winning and even when Ronaldo scored, that they don’t play well enough as a team to win this league in my view,” Neville said on his podcast.
“I think that you have to be a unit in possession and out of possession and when you are only delivering moments, those moments won’t go for you in certain games.
“You need patterns of play, a way of playing and in this moment of time I still see a group of individuals playing in moments – with some patterns and combinations at times – but still a team with some that are pretty new to each other.
“They need to start putting combinations together, patterns of play. I know what’s going to happen when I can see Manchester City building up from the back, I know what’s going to happen at Liverpool.
“When Manchester United are building up from the back or through midfield, I don’t know what’s coming next sometimes.”
